Thoughts Before Leaving

I can't believe I'll be leaving the US for India in less than 48 hours. There's still so much left to do! I was able to get in contact with the ELL office of Metro Nashville Public Schools and the woman I was referred to was very helpful. She gave me several workbooks which have proven to be the most helpful in their program.

I don't think I'll post again until I'm settled in Mungeli. Probably on the 27th or possibly later. I'm trying not to think about the trip too much, because then I start worrying. I've never done anything like this before. Even though I've tried hard to prepare myself, it will still be difficult; especially being away from my friends and family.

I don't really know what to expect once I'm there, so I'm trying to go in with no preconceived notions or ideas. That way I can truly absorb everything around me and experience life in India to the fullest extent possible.

  1. Praying as you travel, for safe travel and heightened senses to take it all in, and for joy.

  2. Can't wait to start seeing your posts once you are settled. Will be looking for pictures, too. I emailed Barbara Allen at Hume Fogg, and sent thanks to Shelley at the ELL office for her time and the materials she sent for teaching the children English as a 2nd Language. After I saw the lessons she had given you, I realized you could jump in with both feet and get going with the students right away. Live, laugh, love and enjoy the children most of all! Love Adora

    Hi everyone!
Internet capability is limited so I'm sending a mass email for now. I don't know if a blog will be possible (I'll try later this week) so mom and dad, please send this on to family members, jonathan (I don't know what email he uses) and stacey especially, and print out to post at church for now.
Got to the house at 11 am (midnight your time). I haven't slept much and am very tired, but all in one piece despite the bumpy 2-hr drive to Mungeli. I haven't met my two roommates yet, they are danish med students, both female.
I've already eaten my first Indian meal! With chai tea and been showed around by Anil's mother. I'll move my stuff into the room this afternoon.
We don't have hot water unless we heat it using a coil in a bucket, but it's so hot here I doubt I'll want it! I'm already drinking tons of water.
I met Teresa, but Anil is away until this afternoon with guests.
I will have to shop for a more suitable wardrobe soon because of heat.
If I get rested enough tonight I will try to sit in at the school tomorrow and bring them all their supplies!! I'm so excited about that.
I guess I'll go. I'm really tired and need to maybe take a short nap or rest my eyes. I will contact you all again as soon as I can, but it might be a few days. Hopefully then I'll have a better understanding of the hospital and school and more to report.
They are still renovating and adding onto the hospital, but it looks great to me. They are currently working on re-doing the ICU so it can be separate from the surgery recovery room. Also they have funding for an eye program, but no eye doctor, so they are working on that. They want to give free eye exams/treatments to people who cannot afford them.
I love you all so much and miss you! Send me a reply if you'd like. I just wanted you to know I arrived okay.
    Love, Lauryn
